When you take your precious little one to your local day care, make sure that bed bugs are not their new playmate!

Even the most trusted and clean daycares can have bed bugs! Learn more about avoiding bed bugs in a daycare center.

Bed bug tips for a daycare center:

  • Check blankets, backpacks, and clothing daily for signs of bed bugs before entering and after exiting a day care center.
  • Know what to look for: know what bed bugs, bed bug eggs, bed bugs shed skins, and bed bug fecal stains look like.
  • Cubbies are a great anti-bed bug tool. Try to keep personal belongings as separate as possible.
  • Hang coats – preferably on metal hooks that are separate enough so that neighboring coats don’t rub up against each other.
  • If you don’t absolutely have to send your child in with that blanket or stuffed animal, don’t!
  • If you must send in cloth items, it is best to send them in a Bug Zip Luggage & Clothing Bag so that bed bugs cannot get to them when not in use.
  • If there are cribs in the daycare center, the crib mattresses should be encased with bed bug bite-proof encasements.
  • If the daycare doesn’t do this as a policy, it is worth suggesting it, or at the very least bringing your own bed bug bite-proof crib mattress encasement.
  • If a bed bug is found on your child’s clothing, blanket, skin etc., when returning from daycare, you can kill it with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and notify the daycare center immediately.
  • If you find bed bug bites on your child, hydro cortisone cream is suggested to decrease the itching – but it’s always a good idea to check in with the pediatrician.
  • Wash your child’s clothing/blankets at over 120 degrees Fahrenheit (or higher if possible) to kill any bed bugs that your child may have brought home.
